Chinese Knotting of Basic Level-Flat Knot

September 12, 2013

Like Double Coin Knot, Flat Knot is shared in Western crafts where it is named “Square Knot”.

Many people know this knot in macrame, because Flat Knot is easy and flexible, especially when you use several cords together.

If you change the direction in each time, you can make the knot flat with zigzagging patterns.(picture on the left)

If you keep the same direction each time, you will get a swirling pattern. (picture on the right)

Now let’s see how you can make them. All pictures below are from http://www.zhongguojie.org

1. Put a long cord (the left part is yellow and the right part is blue) under two purple cords.

2. Curve the yellow cord to the left. Place it above the purple cords and under the blue cord.

3. The blue cord goes under the purple cords and through the yellow loop.

4. Tighten it and curve the yellow cord to the right. Place it above the purple cords and under the blue cord.

5. The blue cord goes under the purple cords and through the yellow loop.

6. Repeat the previous steps and you will make this pattern.

Now let’s see another pattern:

1. Put a long cord (the left part is yellow and the right part is blue) under two purple cords.

2. Curve the blue cord to the left. Place it above the purple cords and under the yellow cord.

3. The yellow cord goes under the purple cords and through the blue loop.

3. Tighten it. Now curve the yellow cord to the left. Place it above the purple cords and under the blue cord.

5. The blue cord goes under the purple cords and through the yellow loop.

6. Repeat the previous steps to make this swirling pattern.

    • I’m glad that you enjoy Chinese knotting! But I’m sorry that most of the Chinese knotting books are written in Chinese. But I found Ms Lydia Chen’s English books in Amazon. Ms Chen is a master in Chinese Knotting and I love her designs. For a beginner, Chinese Knotting: Creative Designs that are Easy and Fun! and Fun with Chinese Knotting: Making Your Own Fashion Accessories and Accents are good choices. I understand that the language problem blocks many fans and that’s why I’m writing this blog.
